Fall Breaks In

A thief in night,
Fall breaks in and steals
Summer currencies, trading them
For ice-capped diamonds
Or autumn doubloons.

Trespassing on our time, a colder touch
holds us hostage for awhile.
And with a change
Of season, fall swindles us again,
Smuggles innocence,
Escapes with youth,
Leaves memories intact.
